About Angela Bishop

I grew up the youngest of four kids of a single mom & we moved a lot (3 schools in 1 year). Early on I learned to be a helper and skillfully adapt to a quickly changing environment. When I was in junior high my mother worked 3 jobs so I could join the alpine ski team, & eventually I would be the first in our family to go to college. My modest, yet vibrant upbringing instilled within me a passion to make things better for others—not as a do-gooder, but as a helper, coming from an empathetic understanding that the playing field is obviously not equal, & the bootstraps mentality is a harmful fallacy. I was a high school teacher & Forest Service Ranger for almost a decade. With teaching I stumbled into my innate mentoring, & my students taught me that an effective leader embodies compassion, curiosity, & humor. Working in remote grizzly bear country taught me vigilance and humility.Along my winding career path of 20+ years in the public & nonprofit sectors, I found out I was good at herding cats & creating cohesive teams from disparate backgrounds. I discovered I loved building bridges, especially those in disrepair. I’m also good at building organizations. With 13 years in nonprofit leadership at five organizations ranging from $100k to $14M, my specialties include: Influencing board & staff to adopt the Housing First model resulting in a 400% increase in the number of women housed the 1st year. Expanding congregate housing by 33% for families with medically fragile children Operationalizing a family meal program to feed over 400/day, increasing meals served by 54% Doubling the budget from $900k to $2.5M in 4 years while securing $13M in capital to build the 1st permanent emergency shelter for families in East King County. Raising a record $1.1M at the annual gala. Elevating organizations to their next best version allows me the privilege of working on solutions with a team. I ask the tough questions and track down challenges & opportunities facing the organization. I actively listen & observe how systems link across the organization & then figure how to suggest & facilitate the adaptive change for efficiency & greater impact.I help organizations decide where they want to go & how to get there; I identify relevant information & support the team in understanding the implications. I then translate ideas into action.Over the years my multicolored career parachute landed who I am today: An optimistic executive leader stimulated by a vision for the future that improves on the present.
