About Angela Schlater
As a Senior Program Officer with the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, I manage a $51M portfolio of 45 grants addressing some of the world’s most pressing social challenges, including global child care reform and decreasing nuclear risk. By collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, I provide clear, consistent guidance, and direction (strategy, finance, communications, & budgets) on grantmaking projects, nimbly adjusting to various global challenge topics. Notable achievements are focused on the Nuclear Challenge Program, co-designing and leading the exit strategy for the $30M grant portfolio dedicated to nuclear risk reduction. I also fostered a partnership with Stanford University to create an endowed fellowship for education and training as a Foundation legacy. Another program I worked on as a Program Officer, included a COVID-19 Recovery & Racial Injustice initiative. I made grants related to issues that address inequity. I assumed this position in addition to full-time responsibilities. Additionally, I serve as a volunteer co-chair for a working group to refresh an exhibit about the Marquette Building Lobby, where I liaised with Indigenous Advisory group members to create an exhibit centered on Indigenous voices and perspectives. I attribute my career success to my natural ability to build rapport, hard work ethic, and desire to learn. A lifelong learner, I earned a Ph.D. in American/Public History from Loyola University (Chicago), a Master of Arts in History from DePaul University, a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Miami University. In 2016, I completed a Public Policy & Nuclear Threats Boot Camp at the University of San Diego. When not focused on philanthropy, I read voraciously, enjoy photography, spending time with my family, and volunteering for causes I feel strongly about.
