West Noggin is a volunteer based neuroscience group that teaches K-12 and adult audiences neuroscience by engaging them with arts integration. We network with Washington State University, Portland State University, Oregon Health and Science University, Pacific Northwest College of Art, and many others to send Graduate and Undergraduate college students into Portland and Vancouver Public schools to teach neuroscience and art ~ subjects that are typically missing from their curriculum. We like to add art to STEM taking it to the next level, full STEAM ahead. We have partnered with afterschool programs like SUN, GearUp, MESA, and the Boys & Girls Club, and given college students the teaching opportunity of running 4-6 week long after school and summer camps for kids. We have a large network of connections with many local and long distance neuro-fans, from Portland organizations like Velo Cult bike shop and pub, OMSI, p:ear, OHSU Brain Awareness, ONPRC and the Portland Art Museum, all the way up to presenting at the White House. We not only create a CV-valuable extra curricular for college students, but also when we show up in a classroom with a large group of volunteers and engaging art materials the novelty factor brings kids who are typically quiet in the class room to life, engaging, asking questions and learning. Teaching people how their brain works empowers them to know what control they can have over their development and behavior. Doing art, and using it as a tool to teach science creates stronger engagement, makes it personally relevant and statistically increases learning retention across broad age groups. I traveled with NWNoggin to Washington DC in 2014 & 2017 to present research on this topic at the Society for Neuroscience national conference, as well as to congress. I am also NIH Human Subjects certified.
