As Head of Design Profession at the Department for Education (DfE), I lead the vision, strategy, and operational excellence of design across one of the UK’s largest government departments. My aim is to empower design professionals, drive accessibility and service consistency, and create world-class user-centred experiences across education services.I champion standards and governance to ensure good design standards are embedded at every level, advocating for assurance, accessibility compliance, and inclusive design. I have led the creation of scalable solutions, such as the Service Assessment Service, which has been recognised across government, setting new benchmarks for quality assurance.In my time in DfE I have- Led the creation of the DfE Design Manual – defining how teams design consistent, accessible services- Built a robust service assessment process – improving standards adherence across digital delivery- Drove accessibility as a priority – developing an Accessibility and Inclusive Design Manual to enhance compliance and recruited accessibility specialists to support delivery- Developed the design capability framework – collaborating with peers across multiple government departments to ensure its implementation across government- Scaled design influence in DfE – from a fragmented discipline to a structured, recognised profession which empowers designers to be innovative, challenging and work in the open- Created the DesignOps function in DfE which supports delivery teams and designers, with the tools, guidance, standards, advice and support they need to design and deliver good services.I am passionate about driving government design to be the best it can be, ensuring that teams are empowered to create services that work for everyone. I welcome conversations on design leadership, accessibility, user-centred practices, and professional development across the public sector.
