Main Responsibilities:Chair the Health and Safety Committee.Provide advice, guidance and support to senior managers on statutory and legal requirements for all matters relating to health and safety compliance. Provide competent advice and guidance to staff and managers regarding statutory compliance, risk assessments, new equipment and specific recognised hazards, including safe working practices and procedures. Develop and maintain college policies, procedures and guidance in relation to health and safety, ensuring they are legally compliant and that management and staff are fully briefed in their application.Carry out risk assessments (in general and specialist areas), provide support, advice and guidance to managers and staff on how risks can be adequately reduced, and review and maintain all records.Monitor and liaise with managers on the completion of departmental and activity risk assessments to ensure they are up to date in accordance with statutory requirements.Oversee the College’s Health and Safety contract with Safesmart. Prepare the annual Health and safety report and other reports as required for the senior leadership team, Health and Safety Committee, college managers and Governors. Carry out health and safety training for staff and students as required by the College.Raise and maintain awareness of health and safety issues in all areas of the College. Oversee the College’s First Aid and Fire Warden provision.Liaise with relevant managers to ensure that the college has all necessary permits for work in place ahead of works commencing, maintaining all appropriate records. Act as the nominated ‘competent person’ Act as the College’s ‘competent person’ in the event of a major incident or in carrying out an investigation, and as the main contact for health and safety queries from staff, students and external bodies.Keep up to date with current and impending health, safety and environmental legislation.
