Andy is the Executive Director of The American Society of Overseas Research. ASOR, founded in 1900, is an international organization whose mission is to initiate, encourage, and support research into, and public understanding of, the history and cultures of the Near East, North Africa, and the wider Mediterranean, from the earliest times. ASOR is apolitical and has no religious affiliation. ASOR has approximately 2,200 Members and Friends. ASOR has 16 FTE employees, including 5 independent contractors. In addition to publishing three journals and scholarly books, ASOR holds an international meeting each year and advocates for history and archaeology in North Africa and the Middle East. ASOR Cultural Heritage Initiatives works throughout North Africa (mainly Maghreb and Sahel) and the Middle East, and especially in the war-torn areas of Syria, Iraq, and Libya.In addition to overseeing fundraising (10 year range between to $1.5 million per year) and the operations of ASOR, Andy has led successful applications for multiple federal grants (2 NEH, 4 cooperative agreements / grants with Department of State, 2 Ambassador\'s Fund for Cultural Preservation, and 5 embassy grants) and non-federal grants (World Monuments Fund, Getty Conversation Institute, Whiting Foundation, JM Kaplan Fund, Foundation for Jewish Heritage, and others). ASOR\'s net assets have increased from under $1 million to above $8 million during his tenure as Executive Director.The growth in ASOR\'s endowments enable a robust fellowship / scholarship program for ASOR members and researchers. ASOR currently awards more than per year to its members for fieldwork particpation scholarships, research fellowships, excavation grants, and conservation / heritage grants.
