My position is all about control. Who does what; What info do they have; What info do they require; Who needs what info; How are they connected; Who is primary; Does this align with the scope and meet project needs; Is this a cost effective/robust solution for the next 30+years? For those that may not have a great understanding of what SCADA really means on a PV + BESS site, below is a high-level description starting from the field and working towards the interconnection. Solar / PV: Field (Trackers/MET stations/PSC (Inverters and Medium Voltage Transformers)/SM fiber and copper communication networks)) These transition to the solar Power Plant Controller (PPC) located in the substation (Electrical Equipment Enclosure – sometimes called a control house). BESS:(AC coupled BESS, a DC coupled systems are integrated with the PV SCADA.) Field (Battery Containers including the Battery Management System (BMS)/PSC (Inverters and MV Transformers)/MM fiber and copper comm networks)) These transition to the Energy Management System (EMS) located in the substation Substation: Yard (HV Transformer(s)/HV Breaker(s)/HV Switches/MV BUS/MV Switches/MV breakers/MV Cap Banks) Electrical Equipment Enclosure connection to Internet (fiber optic is typical)/Substation network (typically a copper backbone) with VPN tunnels to remote off-takers/RTU/HMI/Protective relays and other IEDs {Phasors, DFRs, etc.}/Utility connections/interfaces to PPC(s), EMS(s), and Site Controller) Site Controller: Resides in the Substation Coordinates with the Independent System Operator (ISO), local scheduling entity, Utility, and Owner’s operator of the site to control power flow from the PPC and EMS systems. The site controller regulates voltage and power output at the POI (Point of Interconnect) or the PCC (Point of Common Coupling) depending on the project and interconnection agreements.*Meters/ISO’s not included in the descriptions ** VAr control is implied
