About Andy Brew

I am a River Restoration Professional. My technical interests include Fluvial Geomorphology, Hydrology, Open Channel Hydraulics, and Stream Restoration. As a fly fisherman and native to the Pacific Northwest, I have a vested interest in revitalizing and preserving the aquatic environment. The metric often used in this line of work is both hatchery and wild salmon returns; this is achieved primarily through habitat (targeting juvenile survival) and fish passage (upstream and downstream) improvement projects. Thus I have dedicated my professional career to working as an engineer in the riverine environment at the interface of the biologic and physical worlds. River engineering projects utilize a variety of strategies to achieve these goals that may be dictated by the constraints within the system and desired project outcomes or goals. Strategies may include soft bank stabilization techniques, engineered log jam and wood placement design, fish passage improvements, floodplain re-connection, and/or small barrier or dam removal.

Experience

  1. River Engineer

    Anchor QEA

Jul 2014 — Present · Bellingham, WA, US

Designing and implementing habitat restoration projects in riverine and estuary environments to enhance salmonid migration, survival, and reproduction. Projects have involved a variety of diverse elements including fish passage improvement, small dam removal, large woody material (LWM) placement, and engineered log jam (ELJ) design. Habitat goals have included: side channel development or connection, floodplain re-connection, fish passage, spawning suitability, channel complexity through pool development, cover and hydraulic refugia. I have also performed stormwater modeling to compare peak flow rates, volumes and size treatment facilities in urban settings.
