About Andrew Watson
I grew up in a family of surgeons, and am a 4th generation surgeon and the 7th in my family. With medicine, patient care and a devotion to healthcare in the fabric of my life I have struggled to find a way to take medicine back to the patients, the way my ancestors made home calls, went to the community, and were always available.During my education in Oxford, I learned to question everything, engage in argumentation and rhetoric. To challenge the norm and question in a positive fashion how and what we do in medicine and surgery today. In short I hope to make a meaningful contribution, and give back to society, through medicine and telemedicine. My brother Gray, a masterful and brilliant \"dot-com\'er\" introduced me to the power of technology. After 2 years of a full time surgical practice the transition began into healthcare IT and telemedicine. These are core tools of healthcare that are transforming the landscape of healthcare and how we see populations, patients, members and certainly my surgical trade. The future of healthcare will be in the cloud, be more consumer oriented than ever before, and be transformed by the consumer electronics market. This will enable scientific advancement, the distribution of new treatments, and engage virtual learning communities to educate the next generation of trainees.Currently I spend 15% of my time as a laparoscopic colorectal surgeon with a focus on Crohn\'s disease and ulcerative colitis. The other 85% is spent at corporate UPMC with a focus on telemedicine and international business development. Currently I work for the Insurance Services Division, Health Services Division and International Division.Am grateful for having a wonderful family and the opportunities at UPMC across the payer and provider landscapes. Throughout this journey I strive for Oxford\'s measure of success, being a scholar and hopefully funny as well! Please engage me via Twitter.@arwmd
