Medicine’s wicked problems are, unfortunately, ubiquitous. As an Otolaryngologist - Head & Neck Surgeon, in training, I am committed to positioning myself between the bench and the bedside to direct and guide my search for sustainable solutions. I look to complement the empirical, hypothesis-driven science background my education is rooted in with the freedom and unguided creativity of design thinking and Lean-based social entrepreneurship principles.I am fascinated by exploring the roles of new technologies for clinical translation, and delivering equitable advances in human health demands. Living out that passion, I co-founded LiRA with 4 other UNC professionals in July 2020. At LiRA, we are building next-generation voice restoration technology for voiceless patients using an AI-based platform. Ideating a solution that will directly change my patients’ lives is a dream come true.

   Currently, I am an Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery resident at The University of North Carolina. My education is complimented by a two-year, T32 – NIH Postdoctoral Research Fellowship through the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders. This clinically-protected time permits exploration of my academic interests outside the operating room. Specifically, I am appraising new treatment approaches to head and neck cancer and developing lip-reading software to improve expressive communication for patients unable to generate voice.
