With 25+ years in IT, I\'ve spent the last six years as an Offshore IT Infrastructure Engineer aboard a global survey and ROV/AUV operations vessel — responsible for the full lifecycle of my company\'s IT infrastructure in one of the most operationally demanding environments in the industry.Working on a 6-week rotation, I\'m the only IT person physically on board. When something goes wrong, I\'m the only one who can put hands on it — diagnosing and resolving issues while coordinating remotely with colleagues and vendors over satellite. Sole physical presence, genuine accountability, and the need to get it right first time.My core stack: VMware vSphere, Veeam, SQL Server, Windows Server, Cisco, Fortinet, HPE SAN, and Azure. I manage a virtualised environment of 20–40 VMs across dual HPE MSA 2050 SANs, administer SQL Server, and am actively improving our Veeam backup architecture. I also implemented Starlink to replace VSAT — delivering a step-change in connectivity and meaningful cost savings for the business.At Grass Valley (Belden) I progressed from IT Infrastructure Analyst to DevOps Engineer within the Playout division. My infrastructure remit covered multi-site networking, cybersecurity (Tripwire), software asset management (Snow), Microsoft licensing, MSDN administration, and the Atlassian and JFrog toolchain. In the DevOps role I rebuilt the Jenkins CI/CD environment, cutting build times by up to 72% within a budget.Earlier I spent eight years at Sort-IT supporting SME clients across support, networking, and projects. At NatWest I was part of the team that integrated the RBS service desk post-acquisition — consolidating platforms and transitioning a contractor-run function in-house, saving the group an estimated £2m per year.Outside of work I run a small homelab across a mix of platforms — a Lenovo M720q, Raspberry Pi, and Synology NAS — running Docker containers including Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring, Pi-hole with Unbound for DNS, and Tailscale for secure remote access.
