ABOUT ANDREW ERTL MMSC

Not everyone can be the Green Bay Packers quarterback! Instead, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and embarked on the journey of a lifetime. My travels saw me deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and serving at U.S. embassies abroad. The Marine Corps taught me how to be an effective team member, developed my leadership skills and style, and enhanced my analytical abilities. Beyond this, the Marines made me a better person. I will never forget what the Corps taught me or how thankful I am.One month after separation, I enrolled at Columbia University where my global exploration continued; since, after all, I was studying in the \'capital city of the world\' as one of my favorite professors (Dr. Kenneth Jackson) often said. I was also able to link this global exploration—in the form of select programs to Japan, Israel, Kazakhstan, and numerous other engagements—with my personal passion, as a member of the Ivy League\'s largest student veteran organization: U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University (MilVets). I enjoy passing on what I know to assist fellow veterans where I can.All this led straight to the Schwarzman Scholars Program,\"Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders.to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century,\" through which I earned a Master\'s of Management Science in Global Affairs in July 2018. Not content with one Master\'s, in September 2018, I began studying Public Policy at the University of Oxford\'s Blavatnik School of Government, whose \"vision is of a world better led, a world better served and a world better governed.\"In 2020 I began working on legislation involving the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, and in August 2021 started at Headquarters US Space Force as a John S. McCain Strategic Defense Fellow. Later, I also worked within the Office of Industrial Base Policy on strategic and critical materials and Headquarters, U.S. Navy actioning the then nascent AUKUS partnership. I presently work within Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps as Acting Team Leader within Pacific Branch where I work to optimize Marine Corps force structure in the Pacific. I could not be more grateful for the U.S. Marine Corps and all subsequent experiences, whose depth and breadth were transformative; solid preparation for a career examining problems and finding solutions.
