In this role at Aecon, I manage a large budget, capture and analyze metrics, engage with other senior leaders and support my team pushing out some amazing programming. I love these things and feel I do them well. But if I\'m honest, what makes me \"useful\" to the team are a few specific focus areas that bring the best value out of both the team and portfolio: Actively Engaged - I strive to build the behaviour in a learning team to always look for gaps, opportunities, inefficiencies, capability and solutions. This builds a questioning attitude, analytical thinking, and a challenge function that continuously pushes value. You should never turn this off as a practitioner and we are always watching the road ahead. Strategic Agility - The goal is always to meet your targets.but not blindly. My function is to find paths of execution to strategy while also sharing back feedback and opportunities (sometimes that may be hard to hear). How can we avoid obstacles if we don\'t recognize them? Clarity - It\'s my job to ensure I understand the business enough that I can support or challenge a direction the organization and/or team are treading. My accountability at Aecon includes ensuring learning is relevant (designers understand context), the delivery is impactful (facilitators/developers are clear on the need), and delivered with empathy and consideration for obstacles or resistance (team is engaged with stakeholder feedback). You cannot do this effectively if you don\'t learn about the people whose lives you are trying to impact. Planning - My teams results are only as good as the plan. Expanding your scope to consider not just milestones and delivery, but also maintenance, alignment to other initiatives, product lifespan, individual velocity, morale, etc. All important to consider at every turn. Meaningful processes, project planning tools, relevant partnerships and flexibility are all tools on the workbench to leverage regularly.
