ABOUT ANDREW THOMPSON
Registered Social Worker, policy advisor and researcher, educator, and clinical supervisor. Currently working in regulation with the crown entity Social Workers Registration Board in Wellington as Lead Advisor Social Work, implementing the Social Workers Registration Act (2003). Experienced and published writer, well versed in navigating the Board environment and leading in the social policy space. Previously with the Consult Liaison Psychiatry Team at Starship Children\'s Hospital and educator at the University of Auckland (MSW and BSW). Andrew worked alongside tamariki, their families and staff across Starship on complex decision making, issues relating to trauma adjustment, coping and adapting to treatment. He helped establish the first Paediatric Palliative Care Team and the Bereavement Service at Starship. Andrew worked with staff and whanau/families to resolve complex communication difficulties at end of life. His particular field of expertise is grief and loss in the context of a hospital death. His doctoral research focused on health communication, information technology and the relationships families have with their health care providers. Andrew has published on family meetings in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, clinical supervision, the impact of Dr Google and virtual reality in healthcare relationships. A Registered Social Worker, and a proud member of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers, The Paediatric Society of New Zealand, and the European Association of Communication in Healthcare.
