About Andrew Russell
I am the Provost at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica, New York, effective May 9, 2024. I previously served in a few other administrative roles at SUNY Poly: Interim Provost (January-May 2024), Deputy to the President for Strategy and Planning (October 2023-January 2024), Officer-in-Charge (December 2022-October 2023), and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at SUNY Poly (20••••22). Before moving to SUNY Poly, I served as an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Program in Science & Technology Studies at the College of Arts & Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology from 20••••16. I was a postdoctoral research fellow at the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University (20••••08), and earned a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Technology (Johns Hopkins, 2007) and an M.A. in American History (Colorado, 2003). I am also the co-founder, with Lee Vinsel, of The Maintainers a network that both studies and supports the people who keep our technological world in good working order. Lee and I wrote a book, The Innovation Delusion: How Our Obsession with the New Has Disrupted the Work That Matters Most (Currency, 2020). More information from prh.com/innovationdelusion.Trained as an historian, my research deals with the history of communication networks including analog telephone networks, the Internet, the World Wide Web, and cellular telephone networks. I am the co-author with James Pelkey and Loring Robbins of Circuits, Packets, and Protocols: Entrepreneurs and Computer Communications, 19••••88 (ACM Books, 2022), author of Open Standards and the Digital Age: History, Ideology, and Networks (Cambridge University Press, 2014), and co-editor with Robin Hammerman of Ada\'s Legacy: Cultures of Computing from the Victorian to the Digital Age (ACM Books, 2015). My work also has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Aeon, Spectrum, Technology & Culture, American Historical Review, and Information & Culture.
