About Andrew Routh
Molecular Biologist, Virologist, Genomics and Bioinformatics expert. Project leader, Professor and Principal Investigator. Mentor and Collaborator. Entrepreneur and Inventor. Passion for finding creative solutions using integrated wet/dry Next-Generation Sequencing technologies to address clinical and viral diseases. » Research Summary: RNA viruses are exceptionally diverse and rapidly evolving. Their RNA-dependent RNA polymerases are prone to mutation, lack proof-reading capabilities (with the unique exception of coronaviruses) and frequently undergo recombination. This confers the ability to rapidly adapt to new environments, evade immune responses and side-step anti-viral therapies. In our lab, our over-arching goal is to characterize the molecular mechanisms and determinants of recombination in RNA viruses to understand how these factors drive virus evolution, emergence and resistance to antiviral therapies. The development of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and computational tools has been a central theme in the lab, which generates opportunities for commercialization and collaboration, and which provides a rich environment for training of mentees. We have investigated experimental model systems such as Flock House virus (FHV) and clinically important pathogens such as coronaviruses and HIV. This allows us to study the unique features and idiosyncrasies of each system, whilst maintaining a focus on the shared and fundamental molecular mechanisms of virus evolution.
