ABOUT ANDREW HOWE
I am a colloid / soft matter scientist, expert in co-optimising material formulation for process and product performance. The formulations may contain (nano)particles, polymers and / or surfactants. My skills can be applied to a wide range of application areas. At Aqdot, I use host-guest chemistry to combine cucurbiturils (CBs) with polymers in several industry sectors, including home and personal care and pharmaceuticals. In previous employment, applications included: chemical enhanced oil recovery fluids, inkjet inks, coatings (photographic and inkjet), and oilfield drilling fluids. My current focus is on a CB-based delivery systems for safe, effective delivery of RNA therapeutics and vaccines.I am expert in measuring and understanding then designing the rheology of complex fluids for effective, innovative application. Many of my findings (examples below) have been patented and provide the base for products sold around the world. My expertise in soft materials includes rheology, suspensions, emulsions, polymer solutions, surfactants, gels, soft nanoscience, self-assembly and interfaces. At Aqdot, I have supported development of inclusion of cucurbit[n]urils )outstanding supramolecular \"hosts\") into product formulations across a range of application areas. The focus is on VOC/odour reduction properties. I have supported activities that demonstrate the efficacies of CBs in the inactivation of allergens & viruses. I also collaborate with Imperial College, University of Nottingham, KCL and Centillion in the development of supramolecular nucleic acid delivery systems. I am co-inventor of 28 filed patents and co-author of 84 refereed papers (H-index 35) and given research (40 since 2005) and teaching lectures. My effectiveness as an industrial scientist has benefited from contributing to my professional community, both in academia and across a range of industry sectors. For example by: serving on committees (currently serving on UK SCI/RSC Colloid Groups (ex-Chair) and have just completed a term as President of British Society of Rheology). I have served European Colloid and Interface Society as President and the RSC Formulation Group). I have been industrial supervisor of collaborative PhD studentships (21) and been a visiting researcher (honorary position) at BP Institute, Cambridge University.Recent recipient of Sir Eric Rideal Award from RSC and SCI Colloid Groups
