ABOUT ANDREW BARNEY
I’m a proud Scouser of West African, Caribbean and Irish heritage with a passion for creating music that bridges cultures, connects generations and tells deeply personal stories. As the tenth winner of the Rushworth Composition Prize at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, I have a dream opportunity to compose new music for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and the 10:10 Ensemble; something I’ve aspired to for years while sitting in their audience.As one of five Opera North Resonance Artists for 2025, I developed \"ORIGINS\"; a deeply personal project which explores my multifaceted identity and how it feels to reconnect with one\'s roots via music. I’m also the Pianist-in-Residence with the Arts Bar Orchestra, collaborating with musicians I deeply admire and bringing fresh perspectives to live performance.Languages and cultures are at the heart of my creative work. Fluent in six languages and speaking ten, my international experiences, studying in Montréal and Granada and performing across Europe, have shaped my musical voice.Alongside composing and performing, I’m passionate about driving change within the music industry. As Assistant Producer for PRS Foundation’s POWER UP, I work on initiatives that support Black music creators, helping to create a more inclusive and equitable industry for future generations.
