ABOUT ANDY ALDERSON

I have over 35 years experience in Risk Management and Assurance, with a strong focus on complex and high-risk environments. I have held senior safety leadership positions across the maritime, oil and gas, and defence sectors, working closely with a diverse range of stakeholders, including front-line operations, senior leadership teams, C-suite executives, and national and international regulatory bodies.Throughout my career I have been involved in developing Regulations, Standards, and Best Practices for risk management. I have chaired joint industry workgroups and advisory panels, fostering collaboration and advancing industry-wide safety initiatives. I have supported National Government Agencies, Local and Regional Authorities, and the European Commission, and provided strategic technical guidance.In my current role at SGMF, I am leveraging this extensive experience to support the safe adoption of alternative marine fuels, helping the maritime industry achieve the IMO’s decarbonization goals.Growing up in Portsmouth, a bustling island port city, the maritime industry has been a central part of my life. I\'ve witnessed the changes on the environment, from improvements in local water quality since the 1970s and 80s when I used to fish in the harbour to ongoing efforts to fortify sea defences against rising sea levels due to climate change. Additionally, I\'ve observed positive changes in local air quality thanks to the regular docking of hybrid and LNG-fuelled ferries in the city.I am passionate about addressing the maritime industry\'s next significant challenge: decarbonization. My involvement in the initial development of the IGF Code, enabling the use of LNG as fuel to enhance local air quality and reduce carbon emissions, marked the beginning of my commitment to this cause. Now I am focused on the next phase, exploring alternative fuels like ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol, and facilitating their safe and sustainable integration in alignment with the industry\'s decarbonization goals.
