WORK HISTORY
Sektionsleiter @Universitätsmedizin Rostock
I\'m a broadly trained neurologist including intensive care/ER specialist, pallative care and geratrics. My clinical focus lies on neurodegenerative diseases in generral, and amoyotrphiclateral sclerosis in particular. I\'m heading the specialist center for ALS in Rostock and the multicentric DZNE ALS registry study. We are partners of MND-NET, ENCALS, TRICALS, Precicion ALS, Project Mine, Premodials. In addition, I\'m running a large basic research institute. The main focus of my working group now is the bidirectional translation between basic science and clinical patient work, including human patient-derived iPSC cultures, drug development, biomarker development (wet markers, MRI markers, PET markers and behavioral endophenotypes); characterization of prodromal states of neurodegeneration and clinical correlation of spreading of disease pathology including non motor symptoms in neurodegenerative diseases. Future direction will more and more involve work on healthy and diseased aging including modes and mechanisms of disease conversions from prodromal stages or interventions to avoid secondary aging. To achieve these goals, our group uses the entire spectrum of clinical research from fundamental to patient-oriented research. We combine long standing traditions of neuroscientific research at the Rostock University Medical Center by working on neurodegenerative diseases with up-to-date human stem cell-based cell systems. This mainly includes the use of patient-specific models and the development of individualized therapeutical strategies for neurodegenerative diseases in a bidircetional clinical translation approach.

ABOUT ANDREAS HERMANN
I\'m heading the Translational Neurodegeneration Section \"Albrecht Kossel\" of the Department of Neurology at the University Medical Center in Rostock and the Translational Neurodegeneration group of German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Rostock/Greifswald.The section consists of several research groups, which deal with basic scientific questions about aging and the development and pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Niemann-Pick type C, Wilson\'s disease), as well as with clinical questions and modern concept of patient centered care and the transfer of new findings from basic science into clinical practice (e.g. for improved diagnostics or the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases) and vice versa. We combine long standing traditions of neuroscientific research at the Rostock University Medical Center by working on neurodegenerative diseases with up-to-date human stem cell-based cell systems. This mainly includes the use of patient-specific models and the development of individualized therapeutical strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.
