About L. Andrea Acevedo Charry
L. Andrea Acevedo earned a PhD in Biophysics at Cornell University. Andrea’s research passion is understanding proteins, and how by knowing the structure and dynamics of them we can bring solutions to human diseases. For this, she has dedicated her training to study diverse systems and using a wide number of biophysical and biochemical techniques. Originally from Colombia, she immigrated to the USA in 2011 after earning a B.S. in Physics. One of the biggest surprises for her was seeing that the demographics of the USA are not represented in high education. Because of this, She was involved at Cornell to create environments that are welcome and participate in the different activities to empower under-represented minorities in Science. During her PhD she studied protein-protein interactions by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance under Professor Linda Nicholson. Andrea was a postdoctoral fellow at the Marmorstein Laboratory group at The University of Pennsylvania for 2 years, where she studied novel drug treatments of Melanoma and continued her engagement with Diversity, Inclusion and Science Outreach. Andrea is now a Protein Biochemistry Investigator for GSK as part of the Protein, Cellular and Structural Sciences Group. She hopes to become a leader in scientific research and diversion, equity and inclusion efforts at GSK.Http://laacevedo.weebly.com
