ABOUT ANDREA LUTHI

I am a chemist interested in applying nanotechnology to drug delivery and diagnostics for heart disease and its associated complications. My experience spans several disciplines including chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, and biology. As a graduate student at Northwestern University I helped develop a mimic of a natural macromolecule involved in cholesterol transport in the body using a gold nanoparticle with the goal of generating a novel strategy to treat heart disease. My work included synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles, assessing nanoparticle function with respect to cholesterol transport with cells, and investigating function and pharmacodynamic properties in vivo. For my postdoctoral research, I have branched into soft nanomaterials by working with enzyme-responsive polymer systems. My current research is focused on using these polymer systems to treat the heart after a heart attack and support tissue regeneration.
