About Andrea Cubitt
I am an established biotech executive who came to the United States from the United Kingdom, in 1987. Since 2011, I have served as a Vice President at aTyr Pharma, INC (“LIFE”) where I have a run a variety of departments, and currently lead the company’s intellectual property and academic research collaboration strategy. I am also active in various not-for profit and philanthropy organizations and currently serve on the boards of Equality California, Trans Can Work, and San Diego Democrats for Equality. I completed my postdoctoral training at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, and at the University of California San Diego, where I was responsible for the development of rational design mutagenesis approaches to produce improved mutants of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), including the development of YFP. This work formed part of the basis of the research that was recognized by the 2008 Noble prize for chemistry awarded to Osmamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie, and Roger Tsien for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein. After leaving academia, in 1996 I worked at a number of biotechnology companies with responsibilities focused on new technology development, intellectual property and early phase commercialization. In 2005, I co-founded Anaptys Biosciences, a therapeutic antibody company, and served as Executive Director of Corporate Development until 2009. At AnaptysBio, I was instrumental in the development of the initial business plan, investor relations, in-licensing of key technologies, and the development of the core technology, business development and intellectual property strategies. I also played key roles in the development and implementation of the core technology to use in vitro somatic hypermutation to affinity mature monoclonal antibodies to specific therapeutic targets and acted as a project lead for one therapeutic antibody project through to IND filing. I am currently serving as Vice President, External Scientific Alliances and Intellectual Property at aTyr Pharma, Inc. a position which I have held since February 2018. In this position I have been successful in creating a highly effective scientific research alliance program with 7 major institutions. At aTyr I have played a broad range of roles including Interim head of research,(20••••17) and acting head of manufacturing from 20••••15- where I was responsible for the oversight and management of global GMP manufacturing activities.
