About Andrea Barela

My name is Andrea Barela and I’m the President/CEO at NEWSED Community Development Corporation. NEWSED promotes the economic success of under served populations in the seven-county Denver metro area through community development with a focus on affordable housing, small businesses and asset creation. At NEWSED I’m am responsible for the facilitation of this mission though the collective efforts of the staff and board of directors. I oversee all fundraising and program development, real estate development, grant writing, donor relations, strategic planning, special campaigns, marketing and media relations. I also oversee the production of all special events such as the annual Cinco de Mayo Festival that attracts visitors a year as well as an annual gala event called the Civil Rights Awards. I provide oversight of NEWSED’s 1st satellite program called the ZONE Marketplace which is Denver’s first retail business incubator storefront as well as Colorado’s only social loan program called Lending Circles. In 2014 I was instrumental in the creation of a Business Improvement District for the Santa Fe Drive corridor. The BID is in its 10th year of operation and I serve as its Board President. I have a Bachelor Degree in Political Science and a Masters in Public Administration with an emphasis in Nonprofit Management from the University of Colorado at Denver.
