About Andie Posey
Quality in an acute care hospital isn’t externally imposed. It takes flexible, empathetic leadership to foster empowerment, collaboration, and a quality focus across disciplines, creating a learning culture in the process. The pillars of a learning culture include: Supporting shared governance to promote autonomy and innovative solutions. Empowering nurses at all levels to own their practices, maximizing their ability to innovate. Deconstructing silos to unify the organizational message and mission of safe, quality patient care. I’ve always loved taking on a new challenge to build something better. In an innovative learning culture, the solutions are limitless, although the forces leading to change may be regarded as difficult and unwelcomed. My years in Alaska provided some of the most unforgettable lessons that guide my approach to leadership challenges: THE RIVER My husband and I often kayaked Alaska’s remote rivers and knew if we encountered white water, we’d head into it or risk ending up in a deadend slough, meaning a ton of extra effort to get back into the flow. This taught me you can’t escape challenges. You have to stay in the channel and face them head on, making the best decisions you can, knowing the alternative has a higher potential cost. THE BEAR Once when hiking with my 2-year old, we crossed paths with grizzly bear. I remember considering how I could handle the situation with a toddler in tow and decided to just stand my ground and back away slowly. The bear was curious but eventually went back to his business. Had we run, the bear would have chased us, yielding a potentially unfortunate result. The leadership lesson learned is to stop, think, and not be reactive before making a crucial decision. I incorporate these lessons into the joy and adventure of creating a collaborative, empowered clinical services organization, where providers are encouraged to be proactive and navigate skillfully for optimal patient safety and quality care outcomes.
