About Anchal Gupta
I am a Senior Staff Scientist at Blue Laser Fusion, where I work on developing high-power laser systems for igniting nuclear fusion targets as a pathway to clean energy generation. My work focuses on precision laser control and optimization to meet the demanding conditions required for inertial confinement fusion.Previously, I was a postdoctoral scholar at General Atomics, working in the field of detachment control for magnetic confinement fusion devices. I developed advanced model predictive and neural network-based controllers to tackle the challenges of high-bandwidth actuation with nonlinear, unidirectional actuators. I also built machine-agnostic synthetic diagnostics to integrate high-fidelity simulation results into closed-loop controller design, system identification, and performance testing.During my PhD at LIGO Labs, Caltech, I contributed to the development of future-generation gravitational wave detectors. My work included high-precision optical experiments targeting Brownian noise reduction in Fabry-Perot cavities, and later, leading a team in commissioning a major upgrade of the LIGO 40-meter prototype interferometer.My research interests lie at the intersection of precision control, optics, and high-impact scientific applications. I am particularly drawn to experimental research in nuclear fusion, climate change mitigation, and precision measurement using optics or atomic and molecular systems. I enjoy working on complex interdisciplinary problems where hardware, modeling, and control converge.
