Malabar Architecture Projects / MAP is a multi-disciplinary architecture and research studio based along the Malabar Coast in Kerala. Founded in 2017, our practice engages with a wide spectrum of work—ranging from residential design and adaptive reuse to cultural documentation, exhibitions, and spatial research. Rooted in the specificities of place, we work at the intersection of the vernacular and the contemporary, seeking to create architecture that is both situated and speculative. We believe that a plan is a localized map; a map is a globalized plan. This reciprocity frames how we think about space—not just as built form, but as a layered field of histories, ecologies, and social relationships. Every project begins with its context: the rhythms of climate, the memory of materials, the spatial traditions of the region, and the evolving needs of its inhabitants. In this way, the act of drawing a plan becomes not just a technical gesture, but a form of cultural mapping—a way of locating architecture within larger territorial and temporal continuities. Our design process is deeply iterative and collaborative. We work closely with craftspeople, consultants, clients, and communities to shape buildings that are responsive and resilient. We are especially interested in architecture’s ability to hold nuance—spaces that are open-ended yet grounded, minimal yet layered, modest yet enduring. Malabar Architecture Projects is committed to producing work that is sensitive, critical, and quietly radical—foregrounding locality while contributing to a broader architectural discourse rooted in the Global South.
