ABOUT ANA CRASTIN
Third year PhD student working on a BRC-NIHR funded PhD in steroid immunometabolism and its role in muscle wasting in chronic inflammatory disease.Previously worked as Research technician in the Rowan Hardy’s group in IMSR, IBR at University of Birmingham,(Medical school). My project is researching the therapeutic potential of intra-articular hydrogel-steroid injections for Rheumatoid arthritis treatment. The goal is to achieve an extended therapeutic effect and ultimately decrease or stop bone and muscle wasting in patients.I’ve developed an impressive repertoire of laboratory and research skills while conducting the projects such as cell culture, Isolation of PBMCs from donor blood, mRNA isolation, RT-PCR, Rt-qPCR, ELISA, Radioactivity assays, Tissue embedding and staining, TRAP staining Toluidine blue staining, LC-MS. I’ve trained to perform pre-clinical animal studies to test the hydrogel. As a teaching technician I gained experience in various subjects such as Chemistry, Biosciences, Biochemistry, Chemical engineering, Geology and environmental sciences and engineering. I’ve gained precious administrative and technical expertise and trained a big team of technicians in the multi-subject experiments preparation. I’ve demonstrated practical skills to students in laboratory building their knowledge, skills and confidence in the laboratory. My first research project was on Anti-tuberculosis drug discovery where I’ve did the next techniques: plasmid construct, restriction digest, PCR, protein expression and purification ( IMAC and IEC), Biochemical assays and protein crystallography.I’m trained in Microbiology techniques working with Bacteria and fungi.
