ABOUT AMY STERNER NELSON

I want every woman to know how to use their expertise to make money on their own.Maybe not today, but someday - when you want to or need to. I believe it can save your life.Don\'t get me wrong. I loved working in corporate America for so long. I spent a decade practicing litigation and working on cases that graced the front pages of newspapers around the world. I worked for a F100 company in Washington state. And I even launched a new brand for the iconic Hudson\'s Bay Company. I\'ve also been an employer myself, turning an idea I had (building coworking spaces for women) into a company with 100+ employees,$30 million in venture funding, and in revenue. All inside of three years. We were featured everywhere from the TODAY show to the New York Times and I was invited onto stages at Fortune\'s Most Powerful Women, Cannes Lions and more. But I\'ve also been blindsided by a role elimination phone call on a Tuesday morning. I\'ve watched my business go from the highest heights to near-closure in a black swan pandemic. I\'ve had to navigate a very public, very devastating legal battle with a trillion dollar company that came after my husband. I\'ve had to do ALL of this while supporting my four children. I\'ve also managed to squeeze a whole lot out of life. I backpacked through Asia for months on end before we had cell phones. I dove the Red Sea. I\'ve worked for and met multiple American presidents. I went to Space Camp. I survived a flat line wind storm with 100+ mph winds in the northern woods in Minnesota. I know how to stern a canoe, scuba dive at night, save a life with CPR, use a chainsaw, navigate with a compass, draft a legal brief, build a viral TikTok, write op-eds for major newspapers, and parent a wild pack of girls. And my biggest takeway is that if you can built the network and the skills you need to leverage whatever you\'re good at so you can make money on your own, you can survive the hard things that most people can\'t overcome. You can pick up the pieces when everything around you falls apart. And in the good times, you can use that power to control your destiny - to set your pay, own your time, and build what you want. I used to think I could save the world. I don\'t think I can do that anymore. But I do know in my heart that I can always, always save myself - and my family. I\'m obsessed with the idea that EVERY woman can and should hold this same power. That\'s what I do at the The Riveter today and why you should be a part of it. Don\'t let the bastards grind you down. They aren\'t worth it.
