Students of economics learn about the asymmetric information problem, the theory (and reality) of the second best, and the importance of considering unintended consequences. I have witnessed the best and worst of these concepts in the financial sector over the past 30 years. For example, the elegance of the solution formed naturally by lenders and private credit bureaus to reduce asymmetric information and the powerful economic engine that this relationship fuels is unmatched. It has been a profound joy in my life to work in the financial sector expanding economic and financial opportunity to consumers and small businesses, taking my interest in economic and policy research and turning it into direct impacts on people. A passionate raconteur, I strive to illustrate how economic incentives and technology affect consumer choice, and how consumers’ actions, sentiment, and constraints impact the economy, with compelling stories built on hard data and robust analytics.An engaging speaker, often quoted in print and broadcast media, I have keynoted large industry conferences and anchored a profitable quarterly webinar series (with an average 750 attendees in its second year and $4M in revenue). I have also published peer-reviewed studies and spoken on the economics of subprime lending, foreclosure prevention, mortgage default, income and employment, fair-lending policies, automated underwriting, credit scoring, housing policy, consumer and small business credit, home-price dynamics, and recession risk. These studies have influenced corporate and public policy, expanded opportunity, reduced predatory practices, and increased profitability.
