ABOUT AMY HELLER

I have not followed a straight or standard HR path, but believe my broad and varied experience has provided me with a unique skill set that brings significant value to my role as an HR professional. I started my working career at Western State Hospital a state psychiatric facility where I learned adaptability, flexibility, and how to handle stress on the job. I have a well-rounded labor relations perspective having held all the different roles of Management, Management Advocate, Union Steward, and Arbitrator. This experience has helped me many times find consensus, and at other prevail for my employer on complex and often sticky labor issues. I have been a Labor Relations Manager on behalf of two WA State agencies, a County, and a Housing Authority. I understand the nuance of labor relations and have learned a lot from the varying agency cultures. I have enjoyed working and building relationships with many Labor Partners, Managers, supervisors, employees, and other stakeholders. I have had the unique experience of political involvement: on the state level as the legislative aide for the chair of the House Commerce and Labor Committee. On the municipal level chaired the Tacoma Civil Service Board as new rules were drafted and passed. My management style is that of a team builder or coach. I enjoy being a supervisor and have supervised both support and professional-level staff. I am a strategic thinker and value consensus-building in approaching problem-solving. I believe thru a good consistent process you uphold accountability, efficiency, and fairness when working with groups or individuals. I very much enjoy working in a team environment and the rewards associated with group contribution. I work well under pressure and appreciate working with a variety of people.
