About Amit Anand

I am an international human rights law researcher with a PhD in Law from Lancaster University, UK. My doctoral research, “Unheard and Unnoticed: Violence Against Women in India,” critically examined culturally entrenched forms of gender-based violence including witch-hunting, honour killing, and the devadasi system and interrogated the structural limitations of legal reform in confronting deeply embedded social and caste-based hierarchies. My work is driven by a commitment to bridging rigorous legal scholarship with global policy engagement, with a particular focus on reconceptualising harm in international human rights law and advancing new frameworks for addressing culturally embedded and structurally normalised forms of gendered violence across jurisdictions. I also hold a LLM in Human Rights from the University of Reading, UK and a B.A,LL.B(Honours) from the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru.My scholarship has received international recognition. My research publications are indexed in the official catalogue of the Library of the United Nations Office at Geneva. My doctoral work was cited in a 2025 global policy report by the International Network Against Witchcraft Accusations and Ritual Attacks (INAWARA), engaging directly with my analysis of legislative and systemic gaps in addressing witch-hunting in India.I have also actively contributed to international human rights processes, including delivering selected oral and video statements before UN Treaty Bodies, participating in an expert consultation convened by the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls for a thematic report presented to the Human Rights Council, and co-authoring submissions cited by committees of the UK Parliament and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
