SicklED is a Global Social Impact Fellowship project at Lehigh University. With the primary goal of developing a diagnostic device to test for Sickle Cell Disease and the Sickle Cell trait, our team of undergraduate students works in and out of the lab to develop both resources for diagnosis and education. Each August, SicklED travels to Sierra Leone for three weeks to conduct qualitative research through interviews with healthcare workers and community members, and to collect the feedback necessary to optimize our project for implementation in Sierra Leone; where we plan to eventually distribute our testing device. SicklED works with both local partners - such as OraSure Technologies and Rockland Immunochemicals - and international partners - such as World Hope International and Sickle Cell Society.
