About Alex McGuigan

I call myself a gardener because I believe that software is grown rather than built. Along with that comes a fondness for old code - after all, it\'s working and battle tested. I believe that old code just needs a kind and nurturing environment with lots of sunlight and pruning. My specialty? I know where the bodies are buried, where the shortcuts and hacks have been taken. There’s a delicate art to finding them: a bit of analytics, a bit of manual diagnostics in the logs, and a lot of code reading. Part of the art is knowing when to let sleeping hacks lie - sometimes they’re there for a really good reason. Simple or complex, I make a point of understanding the underlying inner workings of software.Teaching folks to code is my favorite cup of tea - my mother is a teacher and the apple didn\'t fall that far from the tree. In particular, I\'m keen on programs with intensive commitments for both students and instructors.
