ABOUT AMBER L.
Amber Lieto, M.S, is a Speech-Language Pathologist and PhD student in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She earned her Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Seton Hall University. Her work centers on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and disorders of consciousness (DoC). Amber’s research bridges neuroscience and clinical practice, using wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) technology to assess covert consciousness and support communication for individuals who appear unresponsive. She collaborates interprofessionally alongside Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation teams, with a focus on expanding and redefining the role of speech-language pathologists in DoC care. Her long-term goal is to lead an AAC-focused research and clinical program that integrates neuroscience, assistive technology, and evidence-based practice while training future clinicians in innovative communication access methods.Beyond her research, Amber is deeply committed to leadership and professional advocacy. She serves as President of both the SHRS Dean’s Student Advisory Board and the SHRS PhD Student Organization at the University of Pittsburgh, where she works to amplify student voices and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration. She also mentors high school students through the Rotaract Club of Leadership and Service, promoting servant leadership and community engagement. In addition, she supports AAC-focused camps through the AAC Institute’s ICANTALK Clinic and RWJ Children’s Specialized Hospital, helping create enriching, communication-centered experiences for AAC users and their families. Amber is actively involved in the New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NJSHA), serving on the AAC and Membership Committees and chairing the Website Committee. She is currently leading the development of a statewide student hub to strengthen connection and collaboration among New Jersey speech-language pathology and audiology students. Across all settings, she is committed to advancing equitable communication access through research, leadership, and community engagement.
