About Amara McGowan

I am a senior at St. Lawrence University, double-majoring in Data Science and Psychology. My psychology laboratory courses allow me to gain experience collecting and analyzing data, practicing what I have learned in my data science classes. I have experience programming in R, SQL, and Python. In the summer of 2024, I participated in the BRIDGE REU (Bioinformatics Research In Data Science for Genomics) at the University of Maryland’s Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), where I learned the fundamentals of research and how to collaborate on a research question.Last spring, I studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, taking classes both through the DIS program and at the University of Copenhagen. I learned from professors who came from four different countries across Europe, focusing on a core course of Artificial Neural Networks and Deep Learning.This past summer, I worked in Bangkok, Thailand, as an AI Data Integration and Testing Intern at Aqua Baan, an aquaculture company. I gained hands-on experience tackling unfamiliar technical tasks by proactively researching solutions, quickly adapting to new challenges, and building foundational knowledge in areas such as data security and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) tools.
