ABOUT AMALIA GASTALDELLI
I am Research Director at the Institute of Clinical Physiology (IFC) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Pisa, Italy where I head the Cardiometabolic Risk Group and the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. I am also an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the Diabetes Division of University of Texas Health, in San Antonio, TX, USA and an Affiliate Professor at the Institute of Life Sciences of the Sant\'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa.In 2012, I founded the NAFLD Study Group, of which I am still President; since 2018, I am also President of the EGIR Study Group (European Group for the study of Insulin Resistance). From 20••••20 I chaired the European Chapter of the American College of Nutrition (ECACN) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Nutrition (ACN). In 2016 and 2022, I was part of the EASL EASD EASO committee to write the European clinical guidelines for the management of MASLD.My research focuses on the physiological mechanisms that regulate glucose and lipid metabolism and that are altered in metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and metabolic associated dysfunction steatotic liver disease (MASLD). I lead a multidisciplinary group (physicians, biologists, chemists, biomedical engineers) and we use state-of-the-art techniques for a translational approach to the study of human physiology, e.g, Mass spectrometry coupled with stable isotope tracers to assess in vivo glucose and lipid production and disposal, insulin resistance and insulin secretion; omics techniques such as metabolomics, lipidomics, fluxomics and exposomics; imaging tools such as MRI, CT and US to study body fat distribution (visceral, hepatic, cardiac, muscle) and cardiac function and PET to study organ metabolism in collaboration with many institutions in Europe and the United States. I have been involved in several clinical trials investigating the mechanisms of action of antidiabetic drugs as agonists of PPAR-γ, PPAR α/γ, GLP-1 receptor and insulin. More recently, I have started to investigate the mechanisms of action of environmental endocrine disrupters (such as phthalates and bisphenol A) and the level of exposure in the general population.I have published more than 360 original articles and book chapters & hl=it
