ABOUT ALYSSA JOSEPH
I am an Indigenous environmental and anthropological researcher whose work centers relationship as environmental practice. As a W̱SÁNEĆ (Malahat First Nation) scholar, my research bridges Indigenous governance, ecological study, and anthropological approaches to understand how colonial land-use and social systems have reshaped relationships between people, wildlife, and place.My work draws on Indigenous laws, teachings, and relational ethics, exploring how wildlife, communities, and landscapes are interconnected. Using anthropology, qualitative research, and Indigenous methodologies, I document cultural knowledge, oral histories, and community narratives to analyze shifts in human–non-human relations across generations. I also integrate land-based learning, ecological monitoring, and community-driven research to ensure findings are grounded in lived experience and accessible to Indigenous Nations.I have experience collaborating with Elders, Knowledge Holders, and youth to co-develop research protocols that prioritize relational accountability, cultural safety, and community ownership. Through my work, I aim to advance Indigenous governance, environmental stewardship, and ethical approaches to research and policy that honor human and non-human kin alike.
