   Co-developed and co-instructing Healthcare Systems 655.771This course covers the fundamental elements of modern health care systems - including structure, processes, and outcomes of interest – and contemplates enterprise system design in the context of systems engineering principles. The course introduces simple but novel frameworks for decomposing a health system into its fundamental functions and highlights leverage points that could lead to improved value. These frameworks are used to explore organization, financing, delivery, and contemporary improvement initiatives of health care in the U.S, and to assess them against a requirement-driven design. It also discusses several potential small and large-scale reforms to the U.S. health care system and evaluates their likely effects on health care spending, quality of care, and access to care. Comparisons are offered against various domestic health care systems as well as international models.
