ABOUT ALLYSON MCKINNEY TIMM

I feel honored to do work that I love—engaging faith communities in movements for social justice by highlighting the moral and practical power of human rights. Throughout my career, I’ve seen the remarkable good that faith groups can do when they stand with the oppressed, and the harm they can cause when they seek to exclude others from the law’s protection. The Christian case for human rights is strong, but it is not always heard. My guiding purpose is to share what I’ve learned through years of exploration: the best of Christian thought, history, and tradition affirm support for the rights of all people—especially those on the margins. I serve as Founder & Executive Director of Justice Revival, a diverse, inclusive community of Christian faith and a leading voice for human rights in the United States. We promote a culture of human rights through innovative, religiously literate education and advocacy programs designed for U.S. church and seminary audiences. We also convene the Faith4ERA campaign, advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment. My special strengths include daring greatly, writing and preaching straight from the heart, and shaping engaging class conversations that flow from participants’ questions and insights. Cover-Allard K. Lowenstein Fellow in International Human Rights Law at Yale Law School, where I taught in the Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic and worked for the Schell Center for International Human Rights. I returned to the Schell Center to consult on the 2017 Bernstein Human Rights Symposium on Religion and Human Rights. Before that I established and led the Uganda Field Office of International Justice Mission, creating a program to defend the property and inheritance rights of vulnerable widows and orphans. My team educated communities about women’s and children’s legal rights, provided pro bono legal services to the most vulnerable victims, and created a police training program on property-grabbing crimes. At some point, I plan to return to teaching human rights and would consider the right visiting opportunity. I am also available for select consulting engagements.
