ABOUT ALLISON GILBREATH

I am a passionate advocate for children and families, driven by both personal experiences and a deep commitment to public service. My journey began with internships in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Office of the Governor, and quickly grew into a career centered on advancing equity and opportunity for young people. As Senior Director of Policy and Programs at Voices for Virginia’s Children, I lead a dynamic team working across issue areas including early childhood education, family economic security, foster care, youth mental health, and economic security. I oversee policy strategy, advocacy campaigns, and programmatic initiatives that uplift the voices of children, families, and youth. As a nonprofit leader, I strive to build mission-driven teams, advance equitable policies, and create lasting impact for children and families Highlights of my work include co-leading the creation of Virginia’s bipartisan Foster Care Caucus, contributing to landmark investments in kinship care and early education, and assisting with the development of the Virginia Promise Partnership’s policy roadmap. In addition to my policy leadership, I am dedicated to cultivating the next generation of advocates. I serve as a professor and field liaison at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Social Work, where I teach courses on power, privilege, and oppression and mentor future social workers and policy leaders. My background includes service with Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, recognition on Style Weekly’s 40 under 40 list, and a Master of Social Work from VCU.I believe in being a ripple-maker—creating change that extends beyond myself—by building coalitions, elevating underrepresented voices, and advancing policies that improve the well-being of children and families across Virginia.
