ABOUT ALLISON JONES

I am a passionate Earth Science educator with a background in structural geology (faults, folds, and otherwise beat-up rocks) and an unwavering dedication to making education accessible, relevant, engaging, and even fun for my students. But I\'m not your typical scientist. I am a first generation college student. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Communication (say, what?) and it wasn\'t until my senior year of college that I took a science class that CLICKED. I felt an immediate connection to my Geology of California class and an immense curiosity about the state I had lived in my entire life. After a few years of trying to make the most of my communication degree by working in software marketing, I left to pursue an education in geology - a full 180 from my previous degree. I went to community college to take the physics, chemistry, and calculus classes that I had strategically avoided in undergrad because I didn\'t think I could be successful. After two years of taking the prerequisites for graduate school, I was accepted to UW-Madison with my BA in Communication and my freshly-minted AS in Geology. Graduate school was HARD. While I had succeeded in undergraduate classes, grad-level classes threw me for loop and challenged me in unforeseeable ways. But ultimately I made it, graduating with my MS in Geoscience in May 2020. I worked for Carleton College\'s Science Education Resource Center (SERC) where I could dedicate myself to earth science student success and teacher education. Then in 2021, I accepted a full-time faculty position at Sierra College, a community college that, simply put, felt like home. As for that Comm degree? I still use it. Every. Single. Day. To tailor my message to my audience whether it be students, fellow faculty or members of the community. I use it to deliver conference presentations, and create video content. Whatever your windy road: Own it. It\'s what makes you uniquely equipped to solve today\'s problems and make an impact.
