I definitely fit the mold of the typical insurance industry employee: I didn’t choose insurance; it chose me. I’m going to date myself here, but when I saw an opportunity for an underwriter trainee, I went to the library to look up the definition of an underwriter. Fortunately, I was able to land at the St Paul Companies and received the best training in the industry. Also, I was lucky enough to have many mentors who were willing to share their knowledge and I was more than willing to soak it up. Over the past 20 years the job description for an underwriter has changed drastically. As opposed to being chained to a desk and giving a thumbs up or down on risks depending on the guidelines, an underwriter must be part risk manager, part claims adjuster, part actuary, part attorney, part salesperson, part psychologist and part negotiator while always listening to the customer. Being well-versed in the above skills made my decision to go from underwriter to insurance agent at J&R Agency a no-brainer. After many years of helping agents solve problems, I now help clients become aware of issues and offer them solutions. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping someone understand coverages or providing them options that will make the buying process easier.
