ABOUT ALIZA SARIAN

Aliza Sarian taught theatre arts at the Salk School of Science, a public middle school in New York City, for fourteen years. She has also worked with the NYC Department of Education developing assessments, designing curricula, and facilitating professional development. She\'s been teaching remote courses in devising, playwriting, and writing throughout the pandemic. Aliza has been a dramaturg for the off-broadway MCC Theater Company’s Freshplay Festival and was the resident dramaturg for The Bechdel Group-a play-reading series that highlights roles for women in scripts that pass The Bechdel Test. She has performed and collaborated with NYU’s New Plays for Young Audiences series-working with Cecily O’Neill, Susan Zeder, and Bryony Lavery, among others as they develop new work. Aliza has co-chaired the NY Theatre in Our Schools conference and has worked as a consultant for the Lincoln Center Scholars program, where she provided mentorship to career-change teachers as they entered the world of full-time classroom teaching. She has been a faculty member and advisor at Hunter College (Methods in Teaching Theatre, Theatre Practicum) and an adjunct professor at NYU (Literacy through Drama, Playwriting) and Manhattanville College (Stage Makeup). She holds a B.S. in Teaching Theatre Arts from Appalachian State University (‘04), a M.A. in Educational Theatre from NYU (‘06), and a certificate in Drama in Education from Trinity College, Dublin (‘16). She completed a professional sabbatical in 2019, during which she wrote a book on the intersection of the Danielson Framework and arts education. Aliza recently relocated to Calgary, Alberta with her husband, Alex Sarian of Arts Commons, and two dogs-Pickle and Olive.
