We\'re renovating a 1920s corner bank to create space for opportunities.\\\\n\\\\nBuilt to house the Merchants & Mechanics Bank of Hamtramck, later a bar, and most recently a Chinese take-out restaurant, we\'re pretty excited about the possibilities for 10345 Jos. Campau.\\\\n\\\\nFirst things first, we\'re working on rehabbing the building. We’re removing years of layers, and restoring elements of the building’s original character.\\\\n\\\\nBank Suey will be a community space: ready to host events, conversations, workshops, etc. We want to explore new ways to fill main street spaces- while still adding to the walkability and vibrancy of Hamtramck the way that more traditional storefronts have been able to. We want to create a space that supports community ideas and needs, focusing on the value of local economy and building community wealth.\\\\n \\\\n\\\\n \\\\n \\\\n\\\\n \\\\n

ABOUT ALISSA SHELTON
Alissa is endlessly curious and committed to how we build places together- both physically and through community. She is a facilitator, citizen-developer, and community member in Hamtramck. Learn more about her work in this interview with Embassy of Farm Cultural Park: Currently, she leads the Detroit Neighborhood Housing Compact at Detroit Future City. Before that, she was the first Executive Director of Brick + Beam Detroit, an organization which grows capacity and community around home repair and building rehabilitation. Alissa was also the the Director of Training for Incremental Development Alliance, a national nonprofit focused on citizen-led real estate development, where she worked on the national workshop and training series. She is the owner and program curator of the 1920s corner bank building, turned Chop Suey restaurant turned community space. Bank Suey is an experiment in how we use main street spaces, exploring layered uses and curated programming. Since opening in March 2016, the space has hosted over 300 gatherings with attendees covering a broad range of topics, but unified by the purpose of building skills, understanding, and community confidence. She is also the steward of a 100+-year-old Hamtramck duplex and in the process of fixing up a 1923 bungalow. She is a Licensed Builder in the state of Michigan, a 2022 German Marshall Fund Marshall Memorial Fellow, 2017 Salzburg Global Fellow (Young Cultural Innovator seminar), and holds a BSc. in Psychology from Detroit\'s Wayne State University.
