ABOUT ALISON ELY
Civil and Structural Engineer and Humanitarian. Having spent seven years in the private sector working for various civil and structural engineering companies, I moved into the humanitarian sector in 2013. As an engineer in the private sector I had the opportunity to work for both a contractor and a consultant, in the UK and abroad. This varied experience gave me the spring-board to move into working for a non-profit. The knowledge and skills gained by working to a tight program, for a client, with changing needs, and within a tight budget are all skills I use extensively in humanitarian work. As a technician the shelter sector of humanitarian work fits me well; my practical engineering sense and my natural ability to build relationships through empathetic understanding meet naturally in this sector. I have experience as a Shelter Project Manager the in the current context in the Middle East, and also in emergencies having been involved in emergency responses to both the Nepal earthquake of 2015 and the Ecuador earthquake of 2016. Furthermore, I have covered for an interim time the position of Shelter Adviser for Medair in their headquarters. My varied career to date means I am able to quickly adjust to a wide range of teams, tasks and locations and I look forward to applying my experience in a new opportunity.
