ABOUT ALISON BEVAN
Alison Bevan (née Lloyd) is an independent art curator, lecturer and cultural consultant, based in Chepstow. She is currently Chair of the Oversight Board of Bristol Museums, Trustee of Hay Castle, and an Arts Society Accredited lecturer.From 20••••24 she was Director/CEO of the RWA (Royal West of England Academy) in Bristol. Housed in a spectacular Grade II* listed building, the RWA is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces in the country and has gained a reputation for engaging, high-quality, multi-disciplinary exhibitions combining both contemporary and historic artworks, and for its outstanding outreach and engagement work in partnership with some of Bristol\'s most underserved communities. It is an independent charity which has no core public subsidy.Following a period of sustained strategic development, public engagement and fundraising, in 2021/2 she spearheaded the RWA\'s most significant capital development in over a century, a £4.5M National Lottery supported project that vastly improved the popularity, accessibility and sustainability of the organisation.Alison previously spent 14 years as Director of Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, which specialises in exhibiting the work of the Newlyn, Lamorna and St Ives colonies (18••••40)- a subject on which she became an acknowledged expert, lecturing in the UK, USA and Europe and contributing to a number of publications and exhibitions. After graduating in Art History from Nottingham University in 1986, she spent a 14-year career in public galleries in Wales, most recently at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, before taking up the post at Penlee House. During her time in Cornwall, she became an expert on Newlyn School paintings, on which she has written (e.g. ‘Painting at the Edge: Britain’s Coastal Art Colonies 18••••30’, Sansom & Co.) and has lectured in the UK, USA and France, including at the Malvern and Daphne Du Maurier Festivals and the Celtic Congress. She is a Fellow of the Museums Association, an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Bristol and was Chair of the South Western Federation of Museums and Galleries from 2009-12. She was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2013 New Year’s Honours for services to Cultural Heritage in Cornwall. She is also an unashamed and undiminished Ostomate, seeking to raise awareness of hidden disabilities.
