About Alison Banwell
I hold dual appointments as a Research Scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), University of Colorado Boulder, and as Professor in Glaciology in the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), Northumbria University. My research investigates the impact of Earth\'s changing climate on the cryosphere, with a focus on the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. In particular, I investigate controls of ice sheet surface melt, hydrology and dynamics, which are key to understanding global sea-level rise. I use a multi-disciplinary approach involving field observations, satellite remote-sensing, and modeling. I have led many field expeditions in Antarctica and have also conducted fieldwork on the Greenland Ice Sheet, Svalbard, the Himalaya, and European Alps. I am a member of the Science Alliance for Protect Our Winters (POW) and a National Geographic Explorer.
