ABOUT ALISON ASTURIAS KELLY
Alison began her teaching career in the migrant fields of Watsonville, California. She has a special interest in the achievement of immigrant children who are both culturally and linguistically diverse. She is bicultural and bilingual with a Guatemalan American heritage. After 10 years in the classroom, she prepared several federal grants for Berkeley Unified School District to restructure its English learner services. Berkeley schools were awarded over $3 million over the course of 7 years. She coordinated the design and implementation of the project to target three program objects; Student Achievement, Teacher Effectiveness, and Family Engagement. As an instructional coach, Alison engaged over teachers and administrators in the Bay Area to examine their practice and to bolster their effectiveness working with linguistically and culturally diverse students (preK-12). With skillful and intentional facilitation, Alison builds upon the expertise of educators to identify highly effective practice, self reflect, ignite agency, and exercise resiliency. She cultivates a mindset of growth while continuously sharpening our equity lens to meet the unique and diverse needs of our underserved populations.Alison took a 3-year sabbatical in Guatemala with her husband and two children who were both adopted in Guatemala. Upon returning to the public school system, she chose to refine her own teaching practice while gaining first-hand experience delivering Common Core Curriculum in all content areas (K-5) for the past 7 years. Alison currently teaches Spanish at Berkeley Highschool and serves as the Lead Teacher in Distance Learning for the World Languages Department.Whether working directly with students, building capacity in teachers or restructuring complex instructional programs, Alison capitalizes on low performance to transform instruction. Her courageous and innovative leadership relies on a culture of collaboration and trust to optimize student outcomes. Alison seeks out challenging opportunities where she can build collaborative teams to design innovative programs while expanding her own professional expertise.
