ABOUT ALI KERMANI

Ali Kermani is a Senior Scientist at Meso Scale Discovery, Maryland. Previously, he worked at St. Jude Children\'s Research Hospital, where he applies his expertise in protein biochemistry and cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) to elucidate the structures of membrane proteins including voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels and their interactions with modulators and drugs. Kv channels are key mediators of cellular excitability and are implicated in various cardiac and neurological disorders, such as arrhythmias, epilepsy, and tinnitus. By revealing the molecular mechanisms of Kv channel function and regulation, Ali aims to contribute to the development of novel and selective therapeutics for these diseases. With over 10 years of experience in structural biology, Ali has a proven track record of solving challenging protein structures using both X-ray crystallography and Cryo-EM techniques. He has published multiple high-impact papers on the structure and function of the small multidrug resistance (SMR) family of transmembrane proteins, which confer antibiotic resistance in bacteria. He has also established and optimized protocols for the expression, purification, and characterization of a wide range of soluble and membrane proteins, using various expression systems and analytical methods. Ali is passionate about advancing the field of structural biology and drug discovery, and is always eager to collaborate and share insights with fellow researchers.
